Visiting EU commissioner Niven Mimica was in Kenya for a two-day visit where he held bilateral meetings with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He said the EU will establish a 1.8 billion euro trust fund in Kenya.

The money will help provide work opportunities for the youth in Kenya and address the refugee crisis in the Horn of Africa region, North Africa and the Sahel region of Lake Chad.

“We want to help Kenya to create better conditions for the return of refugees to their countries,” Mimica said during a press conference in the Kenyan capital. “Our response on refugees will not only be on development processes in the trust fund, but more political and peace focused in trying to end conflict in these areas.”

The European Commissioner commended Kenyatta for hosting refugees from Somalia and East Africa.

Kenya has received an additional 435 million euros to tackle the issue of food insecurity in arid and semi-arid areas.
