India’s bid to step up its engagement with Africa appears to have checked all the right boxes, with almost 40 heads of state to be present in the capital to take part in India-Africa Forum Summit. This gathering would include world’s oldest serving leader, 91-year-old Robert Mugabe; the colourful Jacob Zuma; the polygamous Swaziland king, Mswati III, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first female president.

A few visiting leaders also have a strong India connection — Mauritius PM Anerood Jugnauth, Somalia’s president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, who studied at Barkatullah University, Bhopal, and Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari, who attended the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington in Tamil Nadu.
