Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke to become Somalia’s next PM

Mogadishu, Somalia (SOMALI AGENDA)- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has tapped current Somali Ambassador to the United States and former TFG Prime Minister as Somalia’s new prime minister.

SOMALI AGENDA has learned from very reliable sources that Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke has left the United States few hours ago and is currently in-route to Mogadishu. SOMALI AGENDA can confirm that official announcement of his appointment will be made on Tuesday December 15th.

Serving under former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, under Omar’s premiership in 2009/2010, Al Shabab systemically routed out Somali Government forces and besieged large swathes of Mogadishu. Corruption and institutional dysfunction were rampant during his short stint as Somalia’s Prime Minister.

During his term under President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Omar in collaboration with Kenya created the Jubbaland Project as a tool to cage the Mogadishu clans, according to the leaked Wikileaks Cables.

It’s believed that with Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke’s selection, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed hopes to repair some of the damage done to Somalia’s donor nations.

Omar is the son of former Somali President Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmake who was assassinated in Las Anod in 1969.
