Parliament approves Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke as Somalia’s new PM
Mogadishu, Somalia (SOMALI AGENDA) Somalia’s Parliament has approved former Somali Ambassador to the United States Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke as the country’s new Prime Minister.
Of the 224 legislators present on the floor, 218 voted for Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke. He takes over the reigns from outgoing Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed. Sharmarke’s nomination is seen as an attempt by Somalia’s embattled President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to repair ties with donor countries after a prolonged political conflict with his prime minister dented the government’s credibility.
Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke, the son of former Somali President Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, has previously been Somalia’s Prime Minister under President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
This is Somalia’s third Prime Minister in the past three years.
