Uganda sends new commander to Somalia



A new commander has been appointed for Uganda Battle Group 16 in Somalia as his predecessor is suspended over allegations of laxity in the line of duty.According to an army statement on Wednesday, Lt Col Peter Emola has replaced Lt Col Bosco Mutambi.

Mutambi was suspended following the recent deadly attack by al-Shabaab militants on the Ugandan AMISOM base in Janaale, Somalia.

Over the weekend, President Yoweri Museveni also Commander-in-chief of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces said the attack was due to laxity on the part of the Ugandan soldiers.

Uganda lost 12 soldiers in the attack, three weeks ago.

Emola first served in Somalia as part of Uganda’s Battle Group 9 between 2012 and 2013.
